CaribWorldNews, BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Mon. May 10, 2010: The 11th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development opened in Barbados last night at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre with the country`s Acting Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart, serving as the keynote speaker.
The opening ceremony from 7 to11 p.m. was infused with a cultural potpourri featuring The Mighty Gabby, the St. Leonards Boys` Choir, the Royal Barbados Police Force Band and an exhibition of arts and craft, from local and regional vendors.
The STC-11 is being hosted in Barbados for the first time and has attracted a number of regional and international delegates to the island. Organized by the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the Barbados Ministry of Tourism, it will run from May 9 to 12.
Several highly qualified and experienced tourism professionals will make presentations during the conference, which has as its theme, Keeping the Right Balance: Creating Opportunities Through a World Class Sustainable Tourism Product. Among them will be Geo-tourism Editor at National Geographic Traveller, Johnathan Tourtellot.
The STC-11 represents part of the information dissemination and regional awareness component of the CTO`s strategy for sustainable tourism. High on the agenda will be the issue of how member states can design and implement sustainable tourism policies and programs.
