Cuban Journalist Freed


News Americas, HAVANA, Cuba, Mon. Feb. 21, 2011: A Cuban journalist who was one of 75 opponents of the government arrested in 2003 has been freed.

The Cuban government freed Ivan Hernandez who had refused to go into exile in Spain as a condition of his release. Hernandez said he would continue working as an independent journalist.

This as President Raul Castro said he wants to clear all political prisoners from Cuban jails. Hernandez was among a group of dissidents whose freedom was brokered by the Roman Catholic Church, and most of whom were flown to Spain upon release.
