News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Jan. 30, 2017: The Caribbean and Latin America was fully represented in the coveted top three spots of the 2017 Miss Universe pageant last night as Miss Haiti and Miss Colombia both earned the top runner-up spots last night in the Philippines.
Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier, 25, was named the first runner-up of the 65th Miss Universe pageant much to the dismay of many fans on social media.
Pelissier, who survived the 2010 earthquake and is now getting her master’s degree in scientific research in optometry and vision, was bested by Miss France, Iris Mittenaere.
Mittenaere , 24, is pursuing her degree in Dental Surgery.
Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar, was named second runner-up. Tovar, 23, has a industrial design and photo production degree and enjoys being an active volleyball player.
All three contestants shimmered in gold gowns.
Mittenaere takes the crown from the 2016 Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach.
The pageant came on the heels of a mega mistake made by host Steve Harvey in 2015 when he announced Miss Colombia as the winner when the real winner was Miss Philippines. Last night Harvey looked visibly nervous before making the announcement but then made a joke of it even as Miss Universe, Wurtzbach, played along, by handing him a thick reading glasses. On social media, fans lauded Harvey for his comeback after the mishap.
