The Honourable Carlos James, Minister of Tourism, officially welcomed regional cricket legends to St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the media launch of the Independence International Masters Cricket Tournament Tour and Games.

The event, now in its most expansive edition, marks a significant milestone in the country’s sports tourism development.

Addressing attendees, Minister James extended a warm Vincentian welcome to iconic players including Curtly Ambrose and Ridley Jacobs, among others from Trinidad and the wider Caribbean. “I’m pleased to welcome these legends to St. Vincent,” he said, noting their past performances at the historic Arnos Vale Ground.

The tournament, which began modestly with six local teams, has grown to feature 21 teams 16 of which are regional and international squads. Over 400 visitors, including players, families, and support staff, have arrived in SVG for the event, underscoring its growing appeal and impact.

Minister James highlighted the presence of the West Indies Masters XI as the weekend’s grand finale attraction, praising their continued sportsmanship and contribution to regional cricket even in retirement. “Their presence here is a testament to the strength of our sporting culture and the value of camaraderie in the Caribbean,” he said.

The tournament is part of a broader push to position SVG as a premier sports tourism destination. Earlier this year, the country hosted its inaugural St. Vincent and the Grenadines Sailing Week, rebranded from the traditional Easter Regatta and held across Bequia, Union Island, Canouan, and Mayreau. In August, the Emancipation Cricket Festival welcomed members of the legendary 1975 World Cup team, further boosting regional and international visibility.

Minister James said, “These events are not just about sports, they are about building our tourism product, creating memorable experiences, and showcasing the vibrancy of Vincentian culture,”. He expressed optimism that next year’s tournament would attract even more participants and spectators, positioning SVG as host of one of the world’s bestorganized Masters cricket events. The Independence International Masters Cricket Tournament continues this weekend.
