The University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus St. Vincent and the Grenadines will host the final lecture in its Spiritual Baptist series.
The event will take place on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, from 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center in Rose Hall.
This lecture marks the culmination of the university’s tripartite series entitled “The Politics and Poetics of the Spiritual Baptists 1849 – 1979,” held in commemoration of the first-ever Spiritual Baptist holiday on Thursday, May 21st, 2025.
The presentation will be delivered by Vincentian Dr. Cleve Scott, lecturer in the Department of History at the UWI Cave Hill Campus. His topic is “The Spiritual Baptists and the Musical Traditions of the Caribbean, 1849 – 1979.”

The renowned historian and musical composer said the Spiritual Baptist community should be proud of their contribution to the liberation of the country. He noted that music—particularly the drum—was a key component in resisting colonial persecution, a theme central to his presentation.
Head of The UWI Global Campus SVG, Dr. Resa Noel-MacBarnett expressed the university’s pride in helping to educate the nation on this important topic in the lead-up to the national holiday. She noted that the previous two lectures—held in Calder by Dr. Garrey Michael Dennie and in Kingstown by Dr. Adrian Fraser—were well attended.
She is encouraging residents of Rose Hall and surrounding communities to attend the final lecture on May 8th at 7:00 p.m.
