A contingent of officers from the British Royal Navy visited the Division of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE) of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) today (October 22).

Though the visit was not a recruitment drive, the officers shared information with the students and encouraged them to consider careers in the Royal Navy.

Forty (40) sailors are here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines – SVG for what the Royal Navy has described on its website as “an emotional ten-day thank-you for its” (SVG’s) “continued support for the Royal Navy”.

As part of their visit, they toured educational institutions across the country, one of which was SVGCC – DTVE at the Diamond Campus and the Arnos Vale Campus.

The officers told the DTVE students there are opportunities for those in the culinary arts, engineering, computer science and technology, and business-related areas. They also said enlisted people can also do their bachelor’s and master’s degrees with the Navy institutions which is an opportunity for students who might not otherwise be able to afford to pursue such studies.

The students at the SVGCC-DTVE asked the officers a number of questions and received answers.

The Division of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE) offers a number of certificate and associate degree programmes across several fields including mechanical engineering, architecture and building construction, digital media and marketing, office administration, accounting, culinary arts, hospitality and tourism management, automotive repairs, electrical engineering, properties and facilities maintenance, agriculture, sales and marketing, computer and electronics technology, among others.

The sailors are also here in SVG to celebrate the nation’s 45th anniversary of political independence from Britain.

“They will take part in ceremonial events, join islanders in public and private events, and above all reunite with their families as St Vincent and the Grenadines celebrates 45 years of independence from the UK,” the Royal Navy said.

A military parade will take place at Victoria Park on October 27 to celebrate the independence.

Though independent, St. Vincent’s Head of State is a Governor General who represents the British Monarch. The country is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
