Some supporters of the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) have dubbed the country’s Prime Minister, Phillip J. Pierre, a code breaker, following his party’s landslide victory and second consecutive term in office.
Preliminary results indicate that Mr Pierre is poised to secure 14 of the 17 parliamentary seats, while two independent candidates won their seats. The opposition United Workers Party was left with only one seat.
Prime Minister Pierre expressed gratitude to all voters, including the country’s civil servants, for their support.
He told national television that the swearing-in of the Cabinet will take place next week and reiterated that promises, such as back pay for workers, remain on the table.
In the 2021 general election, the St. Lucia Labour Party won 13 of the 17 seats.
The code
The 2025 general election victory signifies that the “yellow is the code” mantra, which prevailed earlier this year in Trinidad and last month in St. Vincent, did not succeed in St. Lucia.
In Trinidad, in April, the People’s National Movement (PNM), whose colour is red, was voted out of office by the United National Congress, whose colour is yellow.
In St. Vincent, on 27 November, the Unity Labour Party (ULP), whose colour is red, was voted out of office after 24 years by the New Democratic Party (NDP), whose colour is yellow. While the NDP’s mantra was “Together We Win,” the slogan “Yellow is the Code” was prominent on social media.
