The Minister of Sports, Kaschaka Cupid, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing sports development in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, stating at a press launch that “sports is a pathway and a light out of poverty.”

Speaking at the media launch of the St. Vincent & the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) Vincy Soccer Premier League (VSPL) and the CONCACAF U17 Boys World Cup Qualifiers, Minister Cupid described the partnership with the local football federation as a crucial step in nurturing youth talent and strengthening the country’s sporting future.

“The under-17 tournaments present an excellent opportunity for our young boys to engage in active competition and to showcase their talent on the international stage,” he said, noting that many young athletes come from less fortunate backgrounds and see sports as a chance to transform their lives.

The Minister emphasized that the government’s role is not limited to football but extends to all sporting disciplines. He explained that upgrading facilities is a priority, announcing that four playing fields are currently being outfitted with lights, a project expected to be completed within three to four months.

“Lighting our playing fields gives us an added advantage because it allows athletes and communities to engage in sports and wellness activities after hours. It creates opportunities for exercise, bonding, and community development,” Cupid stated.
He also highlighted the wider benefits of sports tourism, stressing that when Vincentian athletes succeed internationally, the country gains visibility and goodwill.

“Our hotels, taxi operators, and other stakeholders benefit directly from these tournaments. Sports success strengthens our tourism product and contributes to sustainable development,” he explained.

Minister Cupid urged local businesses to continue supporting sports as part of their corporate social responsibility but acknowledged that investment is most effective when athletes demonstrate excellence. “Businesses are only willing to invest in a product or an athlete who can really excel, and we must be cognizant of this fact,” he said, encouraging both athletes and organizations to maintain high standards.

In closing, Minister Cupid commended the SVGFF for its leadership in organizing the Premier League and hosting the qualifiers. He called on the public to rally behind the national under-17 team. “We know the importance of sports to nation-building and sustainable development. Let us come out in our numbers to support our boys. Good luck, and thank you very much,” he concluded.
