Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has announced plans to take legal action against local radio station Hot 97 and its owner, Luke Boyea, over allegations aired on the station concerning the sale of lands in Bequia.
During a recent statement, Dr Gonsalves said he was defamed by claims regarding his son’s, acquisition of 95 acres of private land at Spring, Bequia.
He acknowledged signing a 2017 government letter expressing interest in the property but insisted the government never purchased it and had “absolutely nothing to do” with his son’s eventual acquisition during the COVID‑19 period. “When Storm purchased the land, I didn’t even know,” Gonsalves said, adding that his lawyer would be contacting Boyea. Dr. Gonsalves added: “You are barking up the wrong tree, Mr Luke. You will no doubt hear from my lawyer.”
In response, Boyea told One News St. Vincent that he is unclear on what specific defamation claim is being made and will await formal correspondence from Gonsalves’ attorney. He also questioned the former Prime Minister’s account, saying: “I find it difficult to believe that he did not know his son Storm Gonsalves bought the land.”
The dispute stems from a Hot 97 broadcast in which commentators were discussing the land purchase issue.
