Road crisis sparks threat of van strike in Central Kingstown

Kingstown St. Vincent and the Grenadines September 2nd, 2026-Minibus drivers in Central Kingstown are considering a strike next Monday over what the area’s parliamentary representative has described as the poor condition of roads in the constituency.

The potential action would come on Monday, September 7th the day schools are due to reopen raising the possibility of transport difficulties for students and other commuters.

Speaking on the NDP’s New Times radio programme on Wednesday September 2nd, the Central Kingstown representative Hon. St. Clair Leacock said he had been advised that van drivers, particularly in the Green Hill community, were contemplating industrial action.

He said he respected the drivers’ democratic right to take such action and described their concerns as valid and legitimate.

The representative said roads in Central Kingstown were in what he described as an “atrocious” condition, affecting both commercial and private vehicles.

He said minibus operators, who depend on the roads daily to earn a living, had been asked to tolerate poor conditions for too long.

The representative said he regularly drives and walks through the constituency and was aware of the problems facing motorists.

He said the frustration among van drivers was understandable and insisted their concerns were real.

The possible strike could also affect commuters on the first day of the new school term, when many students are expected to rely on public transportation to get to school.

However, no details were given about how many drivers might participate or how long any strike could last.
