Two Canouan men plead guilty to drug supply offences, Police say

Two young men from Canouan have pleaded guilty to separate drug-related offences after being charged by police with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

The charges stem from separate incidents that allegedly took place on September 19 in different parts of the Southern Grenadines island.

Police said 22-year-old chauffeur Zimroy Edwards of Canouan was arrested and charged on September 20 after officers allegedly found him in possession of 6.3 grammes of cocaine with the intention of supplying it to another person. The alleged offence occurred at Grand Bay, Canouan.

Edwards appeared before the Serious Offences Court on Monday, September 21, where he pleaded guilty. The court fined him EC$385, ordering that EC$200 be paid immediately, with the balance due by September 22, 2026. Should he fail to pay, he will serve three months’ imprisonment at His Majesty’s Prison.

In a separate matter, police also charged Jovannie Mathews, a 22-year-old chef of Canouan, with two counts of possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

According to investigators, Mathews was allegedly found with 288 grammes of cannabis and, in a separate quantity, 2,027 grammes of cannabis during an operation at Happy Hill, Canouan on September 19.

Mathews appeared before the Serious Offences Court on September 21 and pleaded guilty to both charges.

For the offence involving 288 grammes of cannabis, the court imposed a fine of EC$110, payable immediately. In relation to the 2,027 grammes of cannabis, he was fined EC$1,000, also payable forthwith.

The court ordered that if Mathews defaults on either payment, he will serve three months’ imprisonment for each respective offence.

The charges were brought by the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force following investigations into the alleged offences.
