The Barrouallie Government School officially kicked off  Literacy Week this morning with the launch of a student-written book titled Little Pens, Big Dreams.

The book is a collection of stories and poems written by students from Grades 1 to 6, which highlights the creativity and writing talent of the school’s young authors.

Delivering remarks at the ceremony, Minister of Education, Vocational Training,  Innovation, Digital Transformation, and Information Phillip Jackson challenged other schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines to follow the example set by Barrouallie Government School. He commended the principal and her team for their dedication to promoting literacy. The minister emphasized the importance of teachers recognizing the power of literacy and encouraged the young writers to continue developing their skills. “Be builders wherever you are,” he urged the students.

Principal of the Barrouallie Government School Joy Davis-Haynes described the project as a source of tremendous pride and joy for the school. She spoke of the excitement on the children’s faces when they first saw the published book and outlined the contributions of students and staff, expressing gratitude to everyone involved.

Senior Education Officer for District One Mavis-Findlay Joseph also delivered remarks at this morning’s launch. She encouraged the school community to celebrate the achievement, describing it as “something powerful.”

She reminded students that good writers are not necessarily those who get it right the first time, but those who keep trying. She also highlighted the power of words to inspire and uplift, noting that even a small pen can produce powerful stories.

The activities for Literacy Week are being held with the theme “Read What You Write.”
