BREAKING: Former Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves to represent client in court

By Admin. Updated 8:59 p.m., Sunday, April 12, 2026, Atlantic Standard Time (GMT-4).
Former Prime Minister and current Leader of the Opposition, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, is scheduled to represent a client in court tomorrow—his first such appearance in more than 25 years, well-placed sources have told One News SVG.
A trained lawyer from Colonarie in the North Central Windward constituency, Dr Gonsalves will act on behalf of a young woman accused of inflicting bodily harm on a man from the same community.
The man, initially reported to have died, remained on life support at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital as of press time. Relatives describe him as “brain dead,” clarifying that he is not deceased, contrary to earlier media reports.
Reports are that the incident between the man and the teenager resulted from an altercation between them, allegedly rising from tensions they’ve had in the past in the North Central Windward area.
Gonsalves is scheduled to appear with the client at the Serious Offenses Court in Kingstown.
Born on 8 August 1946 in Colonarie, St Vincent, Dr Gonsalves received his education at several prestigious institutions, according to the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ website.
“He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Economics from the University of the West Indies (UWI), a Master’s in Government from UWI, and a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He later completed his legal education at the University of the West Indies and the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica,” the website states.
At 79 years of age, Dr Gonsalves joins the ranks of former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Stuart Young in resuming courtroom practice after stepping down from high office.
