The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Girls’ High School has raised over $13,000 to assist people affected by Hurricane Beryl.

At the school’s annual harvest held today (October 18), the school’s principal – Ms. C. LaToya Deroche-John said students raised a total of $13,614.50 from harvest activities.

Beneficiaries of the funds include farmers affected by Hurricane Beryl, organizations that help to care for people, special individuals from Canouan, Mayreau, and Union Island who lost their businesses in the Grenadines, and teachers at the Union Island Secondary School.

Eight (8) farmers each received XCD $750 Agro Supplies vouchers redeemable at Cobano Ltd.

Twelve teachers and the principal of the Union Island Secondary School each received food vouchers valued at $350 each and manicures and pedicures, and massage vouchers valued at $350 each.

Five organizations also benefited from cash donations to help advance their work. They include the Salvation Army, the Soup Kitchen, Laugh and Learn preschool, Thompson Home, and the School for Children with Special Needs. They each received boxes of food and dry goods.

One farmer, educator, and proprietor of April’s Kitchen  – Anasha Browne said she always donates produce to the school’s harvest, but Hurricane Beryl has impacted her operations. This year, she was only able to give local agro products. She said she was shocked when the school contacted her and reached out with the donation.

The school’s Annual Harvest and Thanksgiving adopted the 2024 World Food Day theme which is: “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.

Another element of the Harvest and Thanksgiving was a cultural showcase where presentations of dance, fashion, song, and oral presentations were made.

The Guest Speaker at the event Mr. Colville King – Deputy Chief Agricultural Officer outlined current food security and agriculture issues to the students and challenged them to play a role in food security.
