More than 200 members of the Girl Guides Association of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, along with relatives, friends and supporters, turned out for a community walk and wellness event aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles and raising awareness about heart disease.
The Association’s “Heart & Sole: Walking Together, Living Stronger” event, held on Saturday, September 26, formed part of activities marking World Heart Day 2026, observed globally on Tuesday under the World Heart Federation’s theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat.” The international campaign focuses on increasing awareness of cardiovascular disease, the world’s leading cause of death.
The morning began at the Girl Guides Headquarters in Level Gardens with a warm-up session led by fitness instructor Kevin Young before participants set off on a 5-kilometre walk.
The route took walkers through Level Gardens, down McKie’s Hill, onto Murray’s Road and along the Windward Highway before ending at Sunset Shores Beach Hotel and Restaurant in Villa. Along the way, Bimbims, Brownie Guides, Girl Guides, Ranger Guides and Leaders kept spirits high with traditional Girl Guide songs and chants.
At the conclusion of the walk, participants took part in a wellness programme that included a health fair conducted by members of the nursing community, where basic health screenings and wellness information were provided.
Medical practitioner Dr Michael Goodluck also addressed participants on the importance of heart health, encouraging people to take practical steps to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease through healthier daily habits.
The event also featured a healthy breakfast, along with fresh fruits and beverages provided by Role Model Fruits and Tus-T Water.
Organisers described the event as a success and said they hope to build on its momentum in the years ahead.
The organising committee, comprising Girl Guide leaders Sylicia Lynch, Daneil Young, Michelle Knights, Ju’Lysa Toney, Wendy-Ann Douglas and Seraphina Howell, said the day’s activities demonstrated the value of pursuing wellness as a community.
“Throughout the event, the spirit of togetherness was evident in every step, smile and shared experience, reinforcing the message that wellness is stronger when we pursue it together,” the committee said.
“It was more than a celebration of World Heart Day. It was a powerful reminder that every step toward a healthier lifestyle contributes to a healthier, happier and stronger community.”
The Girl Guides Association also thanked its leaders, parents, sponsors, volunteers and well-wishers for their support in making the event possible, while reaffirming its commitment to empowering girls and young women to become confident and responsible citizens.
