The Ministry of Culture has officially launched A General History of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the Year 2025, Volume One, authored by Vincentian historians Dr. Adrian Fraser, Dr. Garrey Dennie, and Dr. Cleve Scott. The book, published by Ian Randle Publishers, documents the nation’s early history from 5000 BP to 1838, covering native peoples, genocide, and African enslavement. It is intended as a reference for schools and cultural institutions.
The publication was introduced during a roundtable discussion chaired by Dr. Henderson Carter, senior lecturer in History at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, and chair of the CSEC Syllabus Committee. Dr. Carter, who reviewed the text, described it as both a political asset in the nation-building process and an economic asset within the knowledge economy.
Explaining its inclusion in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) History syllabus, he said, “Here we have not only secondary sources, but a lot of primary sources tables of punishment, maps, archival records. This is the ammunition that students need.” He stressed that the book was added to the syllabus to give students the necessary resources for their School-Based Assessments (SBAs).
Dr. Carter added, “Political because it is part of the nation-building project for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Economic because you are creating knowledge products for the creative industries.”
The Ministry of Culture emphasized that the addition of A General History of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the Year 2025, Volume One to the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) History syllabus ensures that students across the region can engage directly with Vincentian history. By providing access to both primary and secondary sources, the text supports School-Based Assessments (SBAs) while preserving the nation’s history through the work of its own historians.
A General History of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the Year 2025, Volume One can be found in local bookstores as well as Amazon.
