Vincentian Medical Doctor Is FIFA’s 2025 Sports Physician of the Year for SIDS

A Vincentian medical doctor Dwight Richards has been conferred the prestigious title of Sports Physician of the Year – Small Island Developing States (SIDS) by football’s governing body FIFA.

Dr. Richards who was trained in Cuba and practices medicine at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown is also well known in the sporting community, especially in football.

Coupled with his MD, he has an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

In a letter to the SVG Football Federation on behalf of FIFA and CONCACAF, Andrew Massey
FIFA Director of Medical for Fédération Internationale de Football Association formally acknowledged Dr Richards’ “outstanding contributions to football medicine over the past year.”

In the letter, Mr Massey said: “Your
exemplary clinical stewardship within the CONCACAF and FIFA framework has not gone unnoticed. It therefore gives us immense pleasure to confirm that you have been selected as the recipient of FIFA’s prestigious distinction:
Sports Physician of the Year – Small Island Developing States (SIDS).”

“Your work has demonstrated rare synergy between academic rigour and elite sport application. The successful publication of your thesis, now featured on the official FIFA platform, stands as testament to your scholarly depth, methodological precision, and
unwavering commitment to advancing evidence‑based practice in football medicine. “

Dr Richards is also practicing orthopaedic and traumatology areas of medicine, making an impact FIFA says is “excellent” and already resonating “across the global football community as that of a physician whose insight transcends boundaries and elevates standards.

Dr Richards will receive the formal recognition during the Opening Tournament Gala of the CONCACAF U‑20 Men’s Championship in Curaçao on 23 February 2026.
