Kingstown St. Vincent and the Grenadines, October 7, 2026-Twenty-nine people were displaced and are now either in emergency shelters or staying with relatives following heavy rainfall across St Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday October 6, flowing the passing of a tropical wave across the island.
Acting Director of the National Emergency Management Organisation, Kenson Stoddard, says 17 people are currently in public shelters, while another 12 are staying with relatives.
Two shelters were opened in the Buccament,following flooding which prompted a light rescue operation.
Stoddard says members of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force assisted NEMO in safely evacuating several people from a few homes in the area.
The Buccament Bay Secondary School has also been temporarily activated as a shelter, Stoddard said one or two families have lost their homes and are being housed in the shelter.
The Acting NEMO Director says the flooding followed 130 millimetres of rainfall, resulting in flooding in several communities
Stoddard said no deaths or injuries had been reported at the time of his update, and NEMO was continuing to provide support to displaced families.
The National Emergency Operations Centre was activated at about 4:30:am Tuesday October 6 and continued to coordinate the response and collect information on the impacts.
Stoddard is urging residents to rely on official updates from NEMO and the Meteorological Services.
