A 72-year-old Clare Valley woman who was seriously injured during a violent attack at her home in May has died after spending more than four months in hospital.
Jean Slater, a retiree of Clare Valley, died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Friday, September 25. She had remained hospitalised since the incident on May 5.
Slater was one of two people injured during the attack at a Clare Valley residence.
According to the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), Keswert Slater, a 45-year-old delivery clerk of Clare Valley, was arrested and charged on May 6 with burglary, grievous bodily harm and attempted murder.
Investigators alleged that he entered the home of Nadia Slater, a 44-year-old journalist and acting Director of the state-run Agency for Public Information (API), as a trespasser with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
Police further alleged that he struck the journalist with his hands and a 25-pound gas cylinder, causing injuries to her face and chest.
The RSVGPF also alleged that the accused beat Jean Slater about the body with an unknown object in what investigators described as an act that was more than merely preparatory to the offence of murder.
At the time, police said no motive had been established for the attack.
The accused first appeared before the Serious Offences Court on May 7, 2026. He was not required to enter pleas because the charges were laid indictably and was remanded into custody pending further court proceedings.
Jean Slater was the aunt of journalist Nadia Slater.
The accused was granted bail.
It was not immediately clear on Friday whether the Director of Public Prosecutions would seek to amend any of the charges in light of Jean Slater’s death.
The matter is expected to proceed through the courts in accordance with the law.
Police have not yet announced any further developments in the case.
