Police Probe Fatal Bequia Crash That Claimed Life of 12-Year-Old Student

The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) is continuing investigations into a motor vehicle accident in Bequia that claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl and left several other occupants injured.

In a statement issued on Friday, the RSVGPF said the accident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, along the Lower Bay Public Road in Bequia. The vehicle involved was a white Toyota RAV-4 driven by a woman from Lowmans Hill.

Police said the 12-year-old passenger, also of Lowmans Hill, sustained serious injuries in the crash. She was transported to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where she later died despite receiving medical treatment.

Several other occupants of the vehicle were also taken to hospital. They were treated for their injuries and later discharged.

The police have not disclosed the cause of the accident, stating only that investigations remain ongoing.

The deceased has since been identified as Brianna Veira, a student of St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown who had recently been promoted to Form Two.

News of Brianna’s passing has cast a pall over the school community, where classmates, teachers and parents have been expressing condolences to her family. She began her education at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School before enrolling at St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown.

According to preliminary information previously obtained by One News SVG, the family had been sightseeing in Bequia during the summer vacation when the incident occurred. Early reports indicated that the vehicle was travelling uphill when it reportedly stalled, rolled backwards and collided with a tree. Police did not comment on those circumstances in their release. The investigation is ongoing.

The RSVGPF has extended sincere condolences to Brianna’s family and loved ones as they mourn her tragic loss.
