Gunfire sparks panic in Kingstown; heavy police presence as gunman flees

Police have mounted a significant operation in parts of Kingstown after gunshots rang out in the busy Middle Street and Bedford Street area on Saturday morning (August 15), sending shoppers, vendors and other members of the public running for safety.

Initial reports indicate that at around 10:30 a.m., a lone gunman entered the crowded area and opened fire at an individual. The sound of the gunfire caused people nearby to scatter in panic.

It remains unclear whether anyone was struck during the incident, and authorities have not yet confirmed any injuries.

According to reports, the suspect fled the scene on foot towards the Paul’s Avenue area. Witnesses said he was seen running through the crowd while holding up the waistband of his trousers.

The shooting comes less than 24 hours after another firearm incident in the same vicinity.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, a woman was shot in the area. She was taken to hospital, where she remains receiving medical treatment for her injuries.

Reports indicate that the alleged shooter in Friday night’s incident was apprehended by members of the public before police intervened and transported him to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for treatment.

However, while at the hospital, the suspect reportedly escaped custody. Police are actively searching for him.

Based on the information currently available, the two shootings appear to be unrelated. However, investigators have not officially commented on any possible connection.
