Brian Lara has plenty of cricket memories from St Vincent and the Grenadines, but the West Indies great says it’s the food that brought him back.
Lara was speaking at the Argyle International Airport (AIA) on Tuesday, 27 October, shortly after he arrived for the NCL GT20 Caribbean Edition. Minister of Tourism Dr Kishore Shallow and Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture and Creative Industries Kaschaka “Chaka” Cupid were there to greet him.
Asked how it felt to be back, Lara didn’t hesitate.
“I mean, it’s amazing,” he said. “I had some great memories here, a couple of good innings. But most importantly, you know, I like a lot of the food.”
He then added, with a laugh in his voice, that eating was high on his list for the next couple of days.
Lara also welcomed the sight of a Canadian league staging its tournament in St Vincent. He said it felt great to see the country play host.
This visit, he hopes, will be different from his playing days. Back then, he explained, touring cricketers saw little beyond the hotel, practice sessions and the ground before moving on.
“So hopefully next 48 to 72 hours, I’ll be able to see a little bit more of St Vincent,” he said, “and just explore.”
Lara arrived on Independence Day, a fitting time for a visitor keen to see the country beyond the boundary. The NCL GT20 tournament resumes at Arnos Vale Stadium tomorrow, Wednesday 28 October, and the final is on Monday 2 November.
Organisers say fans attending the matches will have the chance to meet him.
