Ms Alia McDowald, who was a Form 5 student at Central Leeward Secondary School in Barrouallie, has died following a prolonged medical battle after being stabbed in the neck in November 2024.
The incident occurred outside a school compound, allegedly at the hands of a student from another secondary school following a disagreement.
Ms McDowald, who was preparing to sit her final examinations for secondary school graduation, sustained multiple stab wounds. One pierced her windpipe, necessitating a tube in her throat, while others damaged her lungs, leading to infection.
The Barrouallie resident spent extended periods in hospital, suffering significant weight loss. The most recent report, emerging a few days ago, indicated she was seeking blood donations.
An athletic teenager and Girl Guide, the 17-year-old leaves a legacy cut short.
Her death has left her family to mourn as well as members of the athletics fraternity in Barrouallie and throughout the country.
