The community of Barrouallie is celebrating another remarkable milestone as Mr Wellington Williams, affectionately known as Papa Willy, marks his 100th birthday today, February 28.
Mr Williams joins Mrs Beatrice Franklyn of Prospect, who also joined the centenarian club earlier this month when she turned 100 on 17 February.
Longevity appears to run in Mr Williams’s family. His father lived to the age of 93, his sister also reached 93, and an aunt lived to the impressive age of 104.
Mr Williams is the father of five children, two of whom are deceased. He is also blessed with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Born on February 28, 1926, in Barrouallie, Mr Williams was known as a “jack of all trades.” One of his daughters, Mrs Clorith Daize, told One News SVG that her father worked as a farmer, road construction supervisor, and Town Board clerk, among other occupations. She said he was also a Calysponian.
Speaking about his character, Mrs Daize described him as a friendly and well-loved figure in the community.
“Adults and children alike in Barrouallie know him. They look out for him, and he looks out for them,” she said. “He is also very humorous and always makes people laugh.”
When asked about the secret to his long life, Mrs Daize said her father credited his longevity to his “trust and belief in God.”
“He literally eats anything and loves sweet things, but he has no high blood pressure, no diabetes, and no major ailments at all,” she added.
Mrs Daize also noted that her father remains sharp and prayerful. “He prays and talks to the Lord. When his mind is clear, he remembers everything, stories from long ago as well as recent events. He can hold a proper conversation with you.”
The family, she said, is delighted to have him still going strong and is celebrating his 100th birthday with him today in the form a family gathering.
