A 29-year-old Belmont mechanic has been fined after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to supply, as the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) says it is maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to drug-related offences.

According to the RSVGPF, Mathew Alexus was arrested and charged after officers allegedly found him in possession of 29 grammes of cocaine with the intent to supply another person. The offence was committed in Arnos Vale on July 19.

Alexus appeared before the Serious Offences Court on Tuesday, July 21, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court fined him EC$1,700, payable within one month. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve six months’ imprisonment at His Majesty’s Prison. The court also ordered that the seized cocaine be destroyed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the RSVGPF said the arrest forms part of its ongoing efforts to combat the possession, trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs across St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Police Force reiterated that it remains committed to disrupting the illegal drug trade and bringing offenders before the courts, noting that illegal drugs continue to contribute to criminal activity, threaten public safety and have damaging effects on families and communities.

The RSVGPF also urged members of the public to continue assisting law enforcement by reporting information relating to the possession, sale or trafficking of illegal drugs through the nearest police station or any other established reporting channel. It said public cooperation remains an important part of efforts to build safer and healthier communities across the country.
