One of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ rising young athletes has received financial support following a standout performance at this year’s school athletics championships.

The Brunch and Soca Foundation presented EC$1,000 to Tyler Hercules after he emerged as the top performer at both the Grammar School Sports and Inter School Sports competitions.

Tyler drew national attention after breaking records in the 100m, 200m, and 400m events, performances organisers described as reflecting “determination, discipline and excellence”.

The cheque presentation was attended by Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Laverne King, St Vincent Grammar School headmaster Hugh Colin Sam and Brunch and Soca St Vincent Event Development Manager Jameliah Crick.

Speaking during the presentation, Sam thanked the foundation for supporting young athletes.

“Thank you very much. You put the money where your mouth is, and we are extremely grateful,” he said.

“I’m certain that it would serve as an inspiration to all of the young, willing athletes that we have here at the St Vincent Grammar School.”

Sam added that the institution continued to place strong emphasis on achievement and discipline. “We are a school of excellence, so we expect our athletes to comport themselves with excellence,” he said.

In a statement, the Brunch and Soca Foundation said investing in young people was an investment in the future of the country. “Supporting our youth means investing in the future of our nation,” the organisation stated.

School athletics remains one of the country’s most closely followed sporting traditions, with the Inter School Championships often producing athletes who go on to compete regionally and internationally.

The donation also forms part of wider support by the foundation for student athletics. Earlier this year, Minister King announced that the organisation had committed to providing EC$1,000 awards to the victor and victrix ludorum at the Inter-Secondary School Championships.
