Excel Math inspires math confidence at Union Island Secondary, awards four scholarships

Students at the Union Island Secondary School are approaching Mathematics with fresh confidence after a four-day community outreach programme hosted by Excel Math.
The initiative, held during the week of October 11, brought interactive lessons and hands-on activities to students from Forms 1 to 5. Much of the work centred on fundamental mathematical concepts, particularly algebra. But the sessions went beyond formulas and equations. A key aim was to help students believe they can succeed in a subject many of them have long found intimidating.
Excel Math’s Founder and Director, Kaville Hazlewood, said one of the biggest obstacles to learning Mathematics is often the lack of confidence students develop because of the negative perceptions surrounding the subject.
“Many students convince themselves that Mathematics is simply too difficult or that they are not good at it. We have seen that when students begin to believe in their abilities, their true potential starts to emerge,” Hazlewood said.
That message appears to have landed. Feedback from students showed that many came away with a greater appreciation for Mathematics, and a clearer sense of what they are capable of achieving.
For four students, the support will continue beyond the classroom sessions. Excel Math awarded four tuition scholarships during the outreach, giving the recipients ongoing help in Mathematics.
The organisation plans to take the programme to other schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Its decision to begin in Union Island was deliberate, reflecting a commitment to ensuring that students in the Grenadines and other communities are not overlooked.
Excel Math sees stronger mathematics education as essential to national development. The subject, it notes, builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and can prepare more young people to pursue careers in quantitative fields.
The organisation currently offers online Mathematics classes for students from Grade 5 to Form 5 and has built a strong record of academic success.
Through initiatives such as this one, Excel Math hopes to make quality mathematics education more accessible, while helping students across SVG develop the confidence, skills and mindset they need to succeed.
