Maintenance Works Delay Reopening at Six Schools

Most schools across St Vincent and the Grenadines will reopen on Monday, September 7, as students and teachers return for the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.

The Ministry of Education says primary, secondary and technical vocational institutions are prepared to welcome staff and students following an extensive programme of repair and maintenance works carried out during the July-August vacation period.

However, six schools will reopen later than the rest of the country’s educational institutions as additional work is completed.

Brighton Methodist School, Calder Government School, Buccament Bay Secondary School and Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia will reopen on Wednesday, September 9, while St Mary’s Roman Catholic School and Langley Park Government School are scheduled to resume classes on Monday, September 14.

The ministry says the delayed reopening is necessary to ensure the affected facilities are fully prepared for the safe return of students and staff.

In recent weeks, education officials, led by Senator Lavern King, toured schools ahead of the new term and reported that repair and maintenance works were largely complete, although some institutions required additional attention before reopening.

The Ministry of Education had also indicated that a major school rehabilitation programme was ongoing, involving repairs to roofs, electrical systems, drainage networks, water systems, playgrounds and other critical infrastructure.

At the same time, a Caribbean Development Bank-funded School Improvement Project valued at EC$73 million is being implemented to renovate eight schools and construct a new Sandy Bay Secondary School.

The Ministry of Education says the ongoing investment reflects its commitment to providing students and teachers with safe, modern and resilient learning environments as the new academic year gets underway.
