Man shot dead days after prison release is SVG’s 31st homicide victim for 2026

St Vincent and the Grenadines has recorded its 31st homicide for 2026 after a man was shot and killed inside a house in the Rockies community on Thursday night, August 6.

The deceased has been identified as Akeem Ferdinand, also known as “Shaka Boom.”

Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and police have not yet released an official statement on the circumstances that led to Ferdinand’s death.

Information reaching One News SVG indicates that Ferdinand was recently released from prison after being charged in connection with a firearm-related matter. His release date was July 31.

His death marks the latest in a series of violent incidents recorded in the country in recent days.

On August 4, Michael Jackson, a 52-year-old labourer of Yambou, died after he was shot by police during an incident in Mesopotamia. The circumstances surrounding that shooting remain under investigation.

The latest homicide also follows the August 1 killing of Clydon Cato, a 35-year-old labourer of Dickson Village.

Cato’s body was discovered in the North Windward community on the morning of Saturday, August 1, with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

On Thursday, August 6, Rhyse Henry, a 33-year-old farmer of Georgetown, appeared before the Serious Offences Court and was charged with Cato’s murder.

Police allege that Henry shot Cato about his body with a firearm, resulting in his death.

Because the charge is indictable, Henry was not required to enter a plea during his first court appearance. He was remanded into custody until September 21, 2026, when the matter is expected to return to court.

As investigations continue into Ferdinand’s death, authorities are expected to provide further information as it becomes available.
