Police Correct Charge Against Stubbs Woman to Manslaughter

The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) has withdrawn an earlier statement that incorrectly said a Stubbs woman had been charged with murder and has confirmed that she has instead been charged with manslaughter.

In a retraction and correction issued on Wednesday, the RSVGPF acknowledged that a previous press release, circulated on September 9, mistakenly stated that Bethany Cordice, 26, of Stubbs, had been charged with murder in connection with the death of Vernan Alexander, 56, a labourer of Largo Height.

The police said that information was incorrect and clarified that Cordice has been charged with manslaughter. The force asked media houses and members of the public to disregard the earlier reference to a murder charge and said a corrected version of the release would be circulated.

The RSVGPF also apologised for the error and any confusion it may have caused.

According to the corrected police statement, Cordice was arrested and charged on September 8 following investigations into an incident on August 5, 2026. Investigators allege that she caused Alexander’s death by striking him on the forehead with a piece of steel during an incident in Largo Height.

Cordice appeared before the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on September 8, where she was not required to enter a plea. She was granted bail in the sum of EC$40,000 with one surety.

As part of her bail conditions, she must report to the Central Police Station every Monday and Thursday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. She has also been ordered to surrender all travel documents, while stop notices have been issued at all ports of entry and exit.

The matter has been adjourned to September 24, 2026, when it is expected to continue before the Serious Offences Court.
