Ottley Hall man killed in Pembroke accident

By Admin. Updated 4:22 p.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Atlantic Standard Time (GMT-4).

A 37-year-old man from Ottley Hall has died after he was struck by a vehicle in Pembroke on Monday evening.

Police have identified him as Jamol Layne.

According to a release issued by the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) on Tuesday, the incident happened around 5:07 p.m. on October 19, near the gas station in Pembroke.

Preliminary information indicates that Layne was a pedestrian when he was hit by motor vehicle TAB-244. Police say the vehicle is owned by Syron Isaac of Mesopotamia and was being driven at the time by Deron Browne of Troumaca.

Layne was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for treatment. He later died from his injuries.

Officers went to the scene and processed it. The police say investigations into exactly what happened are ongoing, and no further details have been released so far.

The RSVGPF has extended condolences to Layne’s family and loved ones.

Layne’s death adds to a painful list. He is at least the seventh person known to have lost their life on the nation’s roads in 2026.

The year began with a double loss. On January 12, a collision along the Lowmans Bay Public Road claimed the life of 58-year-old Stephen Bulze of Barrouallie, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. The driver, Franklyn “Santa” Audain, died at the same hospital five days later from injuries he received in that crash.

On March 26, 74-year-old Mary Brackin of Sandy Bay died after a minibus went over an embankment in Overland.

The youngest victim this year was just 12. Brianna Veira of Lowmans Hill, a student of St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown who had just been promoted to Form Two, was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed along the Lower Bay Public Road in Bequia on July 29. She was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where she later died. Several other people in the vehicle were treated and discharged.

In August, the community college family was left in mourning when lecturer Sherefa Clouden Gonsalves died on August 22. In circumstances that have not been reported by police, her vehicle ended up over an embankment near her home in the Murray’s Village/Richmond Hill area.

September brought two more deaths. Garvet Sam, 56, died in hospital on September 8 after he was struck on a sidewalk in Arnos Vale while on his way to work. A little over a week later, on September 16, Calvin Cockburn, 50, of Greiggs died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. He had been seriously injured when an omnibus plunged over an embankment along the La Croix public road on September 9.

Two of this year’s victims, Garvet Sam and now Jamol Layne, were on foot when they were struck.

Monday’s accident is a sad reminder of the risks pedestrians face on our roads. Motorists and pedestrians alike are urged to take extra care, especially in busy areas and as daylight begins to fade.

Anyone with information that may help the investigation is encouraged to contact the police.
