Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security St Clair Leacock says the full extent of damage caused by heavy rains in St Vincent and the Grenadines is still being assessed, with further inspections expected to reveal the impact on homes and infrastructure.

Speaking during a national update on Friday, October 9, following the passage of a tropical wave, Leacock cautioned against drawing conclusions based only on the damage immediately visible.

He said the effects of the weather system could become clearer as assessments continue, and response teams gather more detailed information from affected communities.

Leacock cited Buccament as an example, saying Area Representative and Minister Huggins had visited the community with Infrastructure Minister Nigel Stevenson and obtained a more detailed assessment of damage to homes, as well as the work being done to restore conditions.

He said the assessments also provided an opportunity to consider measures that could help protect householders if a similar disaster occurs again.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the government was awaiting further reports from the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) and technical personnel, including engineers and technicians, to establish the cost of the damage.

He indicated that a clearer financial picture would depend on the findings of those assessments.

Leacock said the Ministry of National Security would continue to support NEMO as the recovery effort progresses.
