Prisons tighten food delivery rules with immediate effect

Relatives and friends of inmates at His Majesty’s Prisons and the Belle Isle Correctional Facility will now have to follow stricter rules when delivering food, as prison authorities move to strengthen security at both institutions.

The revised measures took effect immediately on Monday and set out new limits on when food can be delivered, who can make deliveries and the information that must be provided before items are accepted.

Under the new arrangements, fruit may be delivered from Monday to Friday, while one home-cooked meal will only be accepted on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Prison authorities said each meal must be a single portion intended for one inmate. In addition, each visitor will only be allowed to deliver food items for one inmate during a visit.

Anyone bringing food to either facility must present a valid form of identification and provide the inmate’s correct full name. Authorities stressed that nicknames, aliases or other informal names will not be accepted.

As is currently the case, all food items will undergo the established security screening procedures before they are accepted into the prison facilities.

Officials warned that deliveries which do not meet the new requirements will be refused. They also noted that persons who fail to comply with the rules may be barred from making future food deliveries.

His Majesty’s Prisons is encouraging members of the public to familiarise themselves with the updated procedures before visiting either correctional facility.

According to prison authorities, the revised measures are intended to improve security while maintaining a controlled system that allows inmates at His Majesty’s Prisons and the Belle Isle Correctional Facility to continue receiving approved food items.

The prison administration thanked the public for its understanding and cooperation as the new arrangements take effect.
