St. Vincent and the Grenadines made an impressive start to its FIBA (International Basketball Federation) AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers campaign with a dominant 85-66 victory over Grenada on Wednesday, July 8, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana.
According to a release from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball Federation (SVGBF), the Vincentian team produced a composed performance at both ends of the court to secure its opening victory and gain early momentum in Group B.
Rookie Shad Thomas led the way for St. Vincent and the Grenadines with an outstanding all-round performance, recording 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. The SVGBF said Thomas registered a double-double in his tournament debut, providing an offensive spark while making a significant impact on the defensive end.

According to FIBA, the victory gives St. Vincent and the Grenadines an early boost in Group B as the team continues its bid to advance from the Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers to the next stage of the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 qualification process.
FIBA also reported that Barbados defeated the Cayman Islands 89-54, Antigua and Barbuda recorded an 82-50 victory over Bermuda, while the Turks and Caicos Islands defeated hosts Guyana 68-55 in the other opening-day fixtures.
The SVGBF said St. Vincent and the Grenadines will return to action on Friday, July 10, when it faces the Cayman Islands. The Group B encounter is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown.
The federation congratulated the players and coaching staff on the opening victory and thanked Vincentians at home and abroad for their continued support throughout the tournament.
