Families who were earlier trapped by floodwaters in Buccament have now been brought to safety as the extent of damage from Tuesday’s heavy rainfall continues to emerge.

Residents who have been canvassing the affected community and spoke directly with One News SVG, said the families stranded in the area near the playing field were successfully rescued with assistance from residents Brian Stapleton and Miguel Quashie, along with officers of the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

According to the information provided, one flooded house was occupied by four adults and two children, while another housed two adults and two children. They are all safely rescued.

Concerning a third home that was also inundated by floodwaters, teams are searching for one man.

Earlier reports had indicated that families were unable to leave their homes as floodwaters rapidly engulfed parts of the community.
Residents say two houses were completely washed away, while another was left partially destroyed.

The rainfall also impacted two schools in the area. Residents reported that both the Buccament Bay Secondary School and the Leeward Seventh-day Adventist School experienced flooding.

Earlier on Tuesday, One News SVG was informed that floodwaters had entered the Buccament Secondary School compound after a rear wall gave way under the force of the water.

Elsewhere, reports indicated that roads in nearby Pembroke were obstructed by fallen trees and debris, while in Rillan Hill a house was destroyed by a landslide. The occupants of that home reportedly escaped without injury.

Landslides have since been reported in Belmont, Sally Spring, and other areas.

Flooding has also been reported in several other communities, including the Marriaqua Valley, Kingstown and South Rivers.

The full extent of the damage across the country has not yet been independently verified, and officials have not confirmed whether there have been any injuries.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or swollen rivers, and follow the guidance of the relevant emergency authorities until conditions improve.
