A man in Jamaica has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The man, Iyan Guzmore was arrested and charged in 2023 for breaches of the Firearms Act and has been sentenced to life imprisonment. He received the sentence when he appeared before the Gun Court on Friday, February 13th.
The ruling was delivered in the Supreme Court following evidence that the accused was found with a gun and several rounds of ammunition during a police operation. Prosecutors argued that the weapon posed a direct threat to public safety.

In handing down the sentence, the judge stressed that illegal firearms fuel crime across the island and that strong penalties are necessary to deter offenders. The court ruled that the man must serve life in prison, with eligibility for parole only after a lengthy period.
Gun violence remains one of Jamaica’s most pressing challenges. Authorities have intensified crackdowns on illegal weapons, and the judiciary has consistently signalled that possession of firearms will attract severe punishment.
