Ethan Kent Earns ‘Most Promising Player’ Honour After Strong Tennis Performances in Barbados

Ethan Kent has been named “Most Promising Male Player” following a two-week international junior tennis campaign in Barbados, spanning April 4–9 and April 10–16, 2026, where he competed across both U14 and U18 categories.
Kent first featured in the Barbados Junior International U14 tournament (COTECC Grade 2), held from April 4–9, where he delivered a dominant group-stage performance. He topped Group 3 with a perfect 3-0 record, securing straight-set victories over Ryan Steuart (6-2, 6-2), Michael Hamel-Smith (6-2, 6-2), and Caleb Mark Wilson (6-1, 6-0).

His group-stage results saw him advance to the main draw, where he continued his strong run. In the Round of 16, Kent defeated Justin Duncan 6-1, 6-1, before overcoming Liam Cave 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. His campaign ended in the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to top seed and eventual champion Vadim Aussepe Vinette.
In doubles, Kent partnered with Liam Cave, entering the tournament as top seeds. After receiving a bye into the quarterfinals, the pair recorded a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Cadiel Wilkin and Caleb Mark Wilson. They were then edged out in the semifinals by Justin Duncan and T’Zuriel Percival, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 in a closely contested match decided by a match tiebreak.
The following week, from April 10–16, Kent stepped up to compete in the ITF J30 Barbados Bowl U18 tournament, where he faced significantly stronger international opposition.
In the singles draw, he was matched against top seed Simon Mujoomdar of Canada, where he was defeated 3-6, 1-6. Despite the loss, the match provided exposure to a higher level of pace and consistency typical of the U18 international circuit.

In doubles, Kent partnered with Brandon Warren, and the pair produced a competitive performance before narrowly losing 6-7, 5-7 to Nicholas Garcia and Alexandre Picard in a tightly contested encounter.
Despite the step up in age category and level, Kent’s combined performances across both tournaments earned him the “Most Promising Male Player” award for the series.
Speaking after the tournaments, Kent reflected on both his U14 success and U18 experience, highlighting the learning curve between the two levels.
“In the Under-14, I think I played some pretty good tennis. I’m content with making it into the semis of both singles and doubles,” Kent said. “The Under-18 was more challenging. I played the No.1 seed and other international players, and it showed me how much further I need to push my game. There’s definitely a lot I can improve on.”

Coach Taj Ballantyne praised Kent’s overall performance across both weeks, noting both his strengths and development areas.
“In the Under-14, Ethan dominated most of his matches and showed great command in his service games and forehand patterns,” Ballantyne said. “At the Under-18 level, the difference was mainly consistency and unforced errors, which is expected at that stage. We will continue working on his backhand, volleys, decision-making, and reducing unforced errors. Overall, I’m proud of his performance and progress.”
The COBALLT Racquet Sports Academy extended gratitude to all supporters, parents, and organisers for their continued support as Kent continues his development on the junior tennis circuit.
