Educator leads ‘Rise Above’ summer programme for Kingstown children

Rather than allowing the summer break to pass quietly, educator Nicole Martindale spent two weeks helping dozens of children strengthen their literacy, develop life skills and build confidence through the Central Kingstown Development Organization’s (CKDO) “Rise Above” Summer Programme.

The initiative, held from 13–26 July 2026 at Arwe Soul Café, located upstairs at the Kingstown Central Market, provided students from Grade 2 to Form 2 with a safe, engaging and enriching environment during the school vacation.

The programme welcomed children from communities across the Kingstown area and focused on supporting their academic, personal and social development through a range of carefully planned activities.

Throughout the two-week initiative, participants engaged in music, arts and crafts, life skills training, reading activities and Reading Diagnostic Assessments. These activities were designed to strengthen literacy skills, encourage creativity, improve confidence and equip students with tools that can benefit them both inside and outside the classroom.

Martindale, who coordinated the programme, expressed gratitude to the executive of the CKDO for entrusting her with the responsibility of leading this year’s initiative under the theme “Rise Above.”

She also recognised the important role played by volunteers, facilitators, sponsors, parents, supporters and partner organisations in making the programme a success.

Special appreciation was extended to sponsors Arwe Soul Café, Harmony Investments Ltd, Phillips Bakery, and Widow’s Son – Maintenance & Repairs for their support.

Martindale said continued investment in young people is essential to helping them overcome challenges and develop into confident, responsible and productive citizens.

“As we continue to rally around our youth, let us remain committed to helping them rise above every challenge and obstacle that seeks to divide or discourage them,” she said. “By working together as a community, we can inspire our children to become resilient, responsible and productive citizens who will positively impact the future of St Vincent and the Grenadines.”

She thanked the CKDO executive for the opportunity to serve the nation’s youth and said she looks forward to supporting future initiatives aimed at empowering, educating and uplifting the next generation.
