Brief Analysis
Based on a review of the 31 homicide victims recorded in St. Vincent and the Grenadines between 7 January and 6 August 2026, several notable trends have emerged. Firearms remain the predominant weapon used in fatal attacks, accounting for 24 of the 31 deaths, or approximately 77 per cent of all homicides. The remaining victims died as a result of stabbings, chopping injuries, blunt force trauma or strangulation, indicating that while other forms of violence persist, gun-related killings continue to dominate the country’s homicide profile.
The data also suggests that homicides are concentrated within a relatively small number of communities. The highest number of killings occurred in the greater Kingstown area and its surrounding communities, including West Kingstown, Stoney Ground, Lowmans Hill, Golden Vale, Mount Young and Kingstown itself. Other communities recording multiple homicides include Diamond, Mesopotamia, Lowmans Leeward and the Layou/Buccament corridor, pointing to several geographic hotspots where violent crime has been particularly pronounced during the year.
An analysis of the victims’ ages shows that homicide has affected Vincentians across a broad demographic spectrum. Based on the victims whose ages have been confirmed, the average age is approximately 39 years, with the youngest victim being 19 years old and the oldest 84 years old. More than one-third of the victims were under the age of 30, while several others were senior citizens, highlighting that fatal violence has not been confined to any single age group.
Men continue to account for the overwhelming majority of homicide victims. Of the 31 people killed, 27 were male and four were female, meaning that men represented just over 90 per cent of all homicide victims recorded during the period under review.
The victims largely came from working-class backgrounds, with occupations including labourers, farmers, vendors, a shopkeeper, a maintenance worker, a watchman, a domestic worker and a retiree. This suggests that those most affected by the country’s homicide problem are ordinary citizens from communities across St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The figures also reveal that several incidents involved multiple victims. Four separate attacks—including two double homicides and one triple homicide—claimed a combined nine lives, accounting for nearly three out of every 10 homicide victims recorded so far this year. These incidents significantly contributed to the overall homicide count and underscore the devastating impact of single episodes of gun violence.
With 31 homicides recorded in the first seven months and six days of 2026, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has averaged approximately 4.4 homicides per month, or roughly one homicide every seven days. The period from March to July proved to be the deadliest stretch of the year, accounting for the majority of the killings recorded to date. These preliminary findings provide an overview of the evolving homicide landscape and may assist in identifying patterns that could inform future crime prevention and law enforcement strategies.
