Well-placed sources have informed One News SVG that all surgical procedures at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) have reportedly been suspended as health officials respond to a developing infection control situation involving patients who tested positive for a multi-drug-resistant bacterium.

Information received by One News SVG indicates that the affected patients have been placed in isolation, a standard infection prevention and control measure used in healthcare settings to help prevent the spread of certain organisms.

Eyewitnesses have reliably reported that officials from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) have flown into the country and are at the hospital. They were seen canvassing the hospital up to Sunday. However, the exact purpose of their reported visit has not been officially confirmed.

Sources familiar with the matter said the bacterium is resistant to multiple antibiotic treatments. The specific organism has not been publicly identified.
