Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture and Creative Industries Kaschaka Cupid has condemned the reported stabbing of a 17-year-old student in Arnos Vale, describing the incident as deeply disturbing as the teenager remains in critical condition at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 9, Cupid, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for West St George, which includes Arnos Vale, expressed concern for the young man and his family.
“My thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family during this difficult time,” the Minister said, adding that he could not imagine the pain and anguish the teenager’s loved ones were experiencing.
Information received by One News SVG indicates that the student sustained approximately 28 stab wounds to various parts of his body. He was reportedly found lying on the ground with his injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit receiving treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been established, and it remains unclear what led to the stabbing. Police are expected to investigate the matter.
Cupid said violence of this nature was unacceptable and called for a collective effort to address crime and violence in communities across St Vincent and the Grenadines.
He stressed that the Ministry’s responsibility extended beyond creating opportunities for young people to include encouraging positive decision-making, promoting conflict resolution and helping young people understand that disagreements should never end in tragedy.
“We must learn to handle our differences differently,” he said, urging young people to walk away from conflict, communicate respectfully and seek help when necessary.
The Minister also emphasised that parents, schools, communities, law enforcement and the Government all had a role to play in addressing violence.
“Our young people deserve to live, grow, and fulfil their potential without fear. We cannot allow violence to become normalised in our society,” he said.
Cupid reaffirmed his commitment to working with stakeholders to empower young people and promote safer communities. He also wished the teenager a full recovery and prayed for strength for his family.
The student’s identity is being withheld by One News SVG because he is a minor.
One News SVG will provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
