Seventeen-year-old Tafari Browne has died after succumbing to injuries sustained in a stabbing incident in Arnos Vale last week.
Browne, a student of the West St. George Secondary School died on Monday morning, October 12, at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit since the attack on Friday, October 9.
Information previously received by One News SVG indicated that Browne was found on a piece of land early on October 9. It was later discovered that he sustained approximately 28 stab wounds to various parts of his body. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition following the incident.
At the time of the initial report, One News SVG withheld Browne’s identity because he was a minor and was still receiving medical care. Following his death, he can now be identified.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing have not yet been officially established, and investigators have not disclosed what may have led to the incident.
Police are continuing their investigations to determine the sequence of events and whether criminal charges will be laid or amended in light of Browne’s death.
On Saturday, Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture and Creative Industries and Parliamentary Representative for West St George, Kaschaka Cupid, condemned the stabbing, describing it as deeply disturbing.
In a statement issued while Browne was still battling for his life, Cupid expressed sympathy for the teenager and his family and called for a united effort to confront violence affecting young people.
“We must learn to handle our differences differently,” the minister said, urging young people to walk away from conflict, communicate respectfully and seek help when faced with disputes.
He also stressed that parents, schools, communities, law enforcement and the Government all have a shared responsibility to prevent violence and ensure young people can grow up in safe communities.
Browne’s death has added to growing concern over serious violent crime involving young people in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
One News SVG extends sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Tafari Browne during this difficult time.
Police are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
