Sion Hill Euphonium to Celebrate Community Legacy with ‘ROOTS’ Production on October 3

More than four decades of music, memories and community spirit will take centre stage when the Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra presents ROOTS: The Sound That Raised Us on Saturday, October 3.

Described as a theatrical concert, the production will tell the story of Sion Hill through a blend of steelpan, theatre, dance, spoken word and visual storytelling, offering audiences a look beyond the performances and into the lives of the people who have shaped the orchestra over the past 40 years.

At the heart of the production is the panyard, portrayed not simply as a rehearsal space, but as a place where generations of young people found mentorship, developed lifelong friendships and discovered opportunities through music.

The concert is divided into five chapters, each reflecting a different part of the band’s journey. 

When the Pan Calledrevisits the orchestra’s early years while introducing its newest generation of players. The Yard explores the panyard as a place of belonging and growth. The Ones Who Stayed pays tribute to the founders, parents, supporters and other contributors, including those who have since died, whose dedication helped sustain the orchestra.

The story continues with We Grew, celebrating the lives shaped by the steelband, before concluding with The Legacy, which brings together several generations of players in a finale honouring the orchestra’s enduring influence.

Organisers say the production goes beyond celebrating music. It also reflects the role the band has played in developing musicians, teachers, artists, community leaders and families, while highlighting the community that helped make those achievements possible.

Alongside performances by the orchestra, audiences can expect scenes inspired by everyday life in Sion Hill and memories from the panyard, illustrating how the steelband has become woven into the identity of the community.

For Sion Hill Euphonium, ROOTS: The Sound That Raised Us is both a tribute and a thank you — honouring those who laid the foundation, recognising those who remained committed over the years, and celebrating the young players who will carry the band’s legacy into the future.

The production will be staged on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
