At a town hall meeting in Central Leeward, hosted by Minister of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience, Hon. Conroy Huggins, tensions surfaced as one attendee demanded the removal of Unity Labour Party (ULP) supporters from top positions.
The attendee argued that after 25 years under the ULP, it was time for New Democratic Party (NDP) supporters to take charge.
“I am supporting the removal of all Unity Labour Party of order that is ahead… put our people in charge because they voted for the change,” Cesar said, drawing applause and murmurs from the audience.
Minister Huggins replied by saying that the consultation was not a partisan exercise but a forum to hear the concerns of all constituents.
“It is not a party activity. It is an activity from the parliamentary representative standpoint to hear the concerns of the people,” he said.
“My responsibility being elected is to represent all of the people. That is the mandate that I signed up for, to represent all of the people
Minister Huggins, who has been in office for less than three months, also responded by urging patience and explaining the realities of governance. He acknowledged that citizens voted for change but stressed that change is already underway, though not everything can happen immediately.
“Everybody cannot be employed immediately. And let us not fool ourselves,” Huggins said. He explained that government cannot provide jobs for everyone and is instead working to build out the private sector to create more opportunities. He added that with the national budget only recently passed, the government can now begin spending for the fiscal year, but processes take time.
Minster Huggins assured the gathering that concerns were not being ignored and that change would continue to unfold. “Nobody is against the concerns raised. Yes, changes will take place and are taking place,” he said, emphasising that the administration must balance expectations with the realities of governance.
The exchange highlighted the community’s impatience for visible transformation and the government’s call for understanding as it navigates the early months of its mandate.
