Seven Vincentians Head to Taiwan for Culinary Training

Seven Vincentians are preparing to travel to Taiwan for professional training in culinary arts and restaurant management, in a programme aimed at strengthening skills within the country’s hospitality and tourism sector.

The initiative will expose participants to advanced culinary techniques, restaurant operations and international hospitality standards, with the expectation that they will return home and contribute to the development of the local industry.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony,  Laverne Gibson-Velox, Minister of the Family and Gender Affairs, Persons with Disabilities, and Labour, described the programme as an important investment in the country’s young people and future workforce.

Ms Velox told the participants that the training would expose them to different cuisines, techniques and methods of working, helping them to improve their skills and broaden their professional experience. She encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity and return home ready to contribute to national development.

The Minister also thanked Taiwan for its continued partnership with St Vincent and the Grenadines, noting that the two countries have enjoyed 45 years of cooperation across a range of areas, including education and cultural exchange.

Tourism Minister Dr Kishore Shallow said the training programme aligns closely with the government’s vision for the tourism industry.

Dr Shallow stressed that participants should not keep their newly acquired knowledge to themselves when they return but instead share it with colleagues and peers working throughout the hospitality sector.

He said gastronomy is becoming an increasingly important part of the visitor experience, noting that tourists are travelling not only for beaches and hospitality but also to experience local culture through food.

According to Dr Shallow, strengthening culinary skills and professionalism within the industry will help support the development of the country’s tourism brand and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Also addressing the event was Deputy Councillor and Representative of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Eugene Shu, who described the programme as an important example of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. He said Taiwan continues to provide opportunities through workshops, seminars and training programmes that help participants develop their skills and contribute to their home countries.

The seven participants are expected to receive hands-on training in Taiwan before returning to St Vincent and the Grenadines with new knowledge and experience to support the country’s growing hospitality and tourism sector.
