Department of Culture Invites Public to Celebrate Indigenous People’s Week 2026

The Department of Culture, within the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Creative Industries, is inviting Vincentians to celebrate the nation’s rich indigenous heritage during Indigenous People’s Week 2026, which will be observed under the theme “Ah Way Arwe Come From.”

Cultural Research Officer Rawdica Stephen said the week of activities is designed to educate the public about the history, traditions, and enduring legacy of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ First Peoples, while fostering a greater appreciation for the country’s cultural identity.

The activities commenced today with radio and television programmes and the launch of a social media information series designed by YES Intern Keif Adams.  The social media information series will feature educational content on the country’s indigenous history and heritage and will run from August 10 to 14.

The observance continues on Tuesday, August 12, with a special interview featuring Augustine “Sardo Sutherland” of  the Kalinago Tribe, which will be aired on VC3 television.

The week’s activities will culminate on Friday, August 14, with an Indigenous Heritage Exhibition at the Cruise Ship Terminal Lawn, where patrons will have the opportunity to experience exhibits highlighting indigenous traditions, craftsmanship, history and cultural practices.

Information Officer assigned to the Department of Culture, Ashecia Sam, is encouraging the public to take part in the week’s activities. “Indigenous People’s Week is an opportunity for all Vincentians to reconnect with our roots and gain a deeper appreciation for the people who laid the foundation of our nation’s history. We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate our indigenous heritage, learn from it, and honour the legacy of our First Peoples.”

The Department of Culture believes the observance will not only increase public awareness of the country’s indigenous history but also inspire greater appreciation for the cultural traditions that continue to shape St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
