Police are investigating three separate firearm incidents that unfolded in Kingstown over the weekend, leaving two females nursing gunshot injuries and raising fresh concerns about gun violence in the capital.
In a statement issued on Sunday (August 16), the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) confirmed that detectives are investigating two incidents that occurred near a bar on Middle Street between Friday night and Saturday morning, as well as a separate shooting near the Grenadines Wharf during the early hours of Sunday.
The first incident occurred at about 11 p.m. on Friday, August 14, when several people were inside the Middle Street establishment. According to the RSVGPF, a 29-year-old man entered the premises and allegedly discharged a firearm.
A 25-year-old woman from Lowmans Leeward sustained a gunshot wound to her left arm. She was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where she received treatment before being discharged.
Police said patrons at the establishment intervened, disarmed the suspect and handed both him and the firearm, described as a .38 revolver, over to officers. The man reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontation and remains a patient at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital under police guard.
Less than 12 hours later, at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, another firearm incident occurred outside the same establishment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two men, aged 24 and 21, were approached by a masked individual armed with a firearm. Investigators said the gunman initially attempted to discharge the weapon before firing several shots as the men fled the area.
Neither of the intended targets was injured. However, a nearby motor vehicle sustained damage to its front windscreen consistent with gunfire.
The masked suspect was last seen heading in the direction of the nearby gas station and Paul’s Avenue.
While both incidents occurred near the same location, the RSVGPF said it is not, at this stage, drawing any public conclusions about whether they are connected. Investigators are continuing to examine the evidence surrounding each incident.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, police are also investigating a shooting near the Grenadines Wharf that occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 16.
According to preliminary information, a firearm was discharged at a motor vehicle as people were leaving the area.
Police said a 17-year-old female (the age provided to One News SVG was 16), sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where she received treatment. Police said she is in stable condition.
The circumstances surrounding that shooting remain under investigation.
The RSVGPF said it is appealing to anyone with information that could assist investigators in any of the three incidents to contact the Criminal Investigations Department, the Major Crime Unit or the nearest police station.
Police said further information will be released as the investigations progress.
