For veteran communicator and freelance journalist Val Matthias, education has never been a destination. Instead, it has remained a continuous journey, one that has now reached another significant milestone with the completion of a Master of Science degree.
Matthias, who contributes to One News SVG as a freelance journalist while also working as a communications consultant, has successfully earned a Master of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus.
The achievement adds to a career spanning more than two decades in the media industry, during which he has worked across radio broadcasting, journalism, lecturing and professional training. His path reflects a belief that personal and professional growth does not end with experience but is strengthened through continued learning.
A trained communicator, Matthias also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication from UWI Mona and a Certificate in Digital Marketing. Throughout his broadcasting career, he progressed through the ranks to become a programme manager, building extensive experience in news, programming and media management.
His academic accomplishments complement a career that has seen him combine practical media expertise with a growing interest in tourism and hospitality, an area that continues to play a vital role in the economic development of St Vincent and the Grenadines and the wider Caribbean.
Those who have worked alongside Matthias describe him as someone who has consistently embraced new opportunities to learn and share knowledge. Beyond journalism and consultancy, he has also contributed to education and training, helping to develop skills within the communications field.
His latest qualification serves as a reminder that higher education is not limited by age or career stage. Instead, it underscores the value of lifelong learning and the importance of continually adapting in an evolving professional landscape.
