Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday has convened the first meeting of a National Cost of Living Task Force in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as the government seeks to address rising prices and growing economic pressures facing households and businesses.

The inaugural meeting, held on Monday, brought together representatives from the public and private sectors, including supermarket operators, fuel providers, VINLEC, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the task force was established to identify practical responses to increasing living costs amid continued global uncertainty and instability linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Officials said international pressures on fuel prices, shipping costs and global supply chains continue to affect the local economy.

During the discussions, Dr. Friday reportedly told stakeholders that tackling the cost of living remains one of the government’s highest priorities.

He stressed that no single institution could resolve the issue independently and called for greater collaboration between government agencies, businesses and other national stakeholders.

The task force is expected to focus on three main areas: energy security, food security and supply chain resilience.

On energy, discussions are expected to centre on measures aimed at reducing the impact of fuel and electricity costs on consumers.

Food security initiatives will include efforts to stabilise prices and strengthen local agricultural production, while supply chain measures are expected to explore ways of improving efficiency and identifying alternative regional sourcing options.

The government also acknowledged that there are no immediate or simple solutions to the international factors driving inflation and higher consumer costs.

However, officials said the administration intends to explore “every avenue” to provide relief to Vincentians and improve the country’s long-term economic resilience.

The National Cost of Living Task Force is expected to meet monthly as the government seeks to move discussions towards what it described as “practical action” for consumers and businesses.
