St Vincent and the Grenadines has received a new agro-processing facility from the Government of India under a US$1 million initiative aimed at strengthening food security, expanding value-added agriculture and supporting the country’s farming sector.

The Leafy Vegetable and Root Crop Processing and Packaging Facility at Langley Park was officially presented on July 10, 2026, by India’s High Commissioner to St Vincent and the Grenadines, H.E. Subhash P. Gupta, to Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation, Israel Bruce. The two officials also jointly unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the completion of the project.

The Langley Park facility forms part of the Republic of India SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Development Project, which also included upgrades to agro-processing hubs at La Croix and Lauders.

The facilities are part of a US$1 million investment by the Government of India aimed at strengthening food security and increasing agricultural value addition. According to information released by the Indian High Commission, they are designed to process and package at least 45,000 pounds of fresh fruits, vegetables and root crops each day, helping to reduce post-harvest losses while creating greater opportunities for value-added production.

The Government of India supplied the processing machinery, while the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Consultancy Services (NABCONS) oversaw its installation and commissioning.

The ceremony was also attended by area representative and Minister of Social Welfare and Community Empowerment, Disaster Management and National Heritage, Shevern John, along with senior government officials and farmers from surrounding communities.

The project is also part of India’s Supply of Equipment for Efficient Development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SEEDS) Initiative, announced during the India–CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) Ministerial Meeting in 2023 by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar. The initiative was inspired by the vision of Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to promote inclusive and holistic development among partner countries.

In a statement following the handover ceremony, the Indian High Commission said the project “underscores India’s unwavering commitment to agricultural value addition, food security and sustainable development alongside our partners in the Caribbean.”

The investment is expected to strengthen St Vincent and the Grenadines’ agro-processing sector by enabling more locally grown produce to be cleaned, processed and packaged for domestic and export markets. The upgraded facilities are also expected to help reduce post-harvest losses, improve food security, create opportunities for greater value addition and support increased incomes for farmers and agro-processors.
